Mud Mountain

Mud Mountain Rim Trail

Western Washington, hiking, climbing, Best of the NW year-round trails. The wood deck lookout above the White River is the starting point of the 1/3rd mile overlook of the flood control dam. When built in 1948 was the highest rock and earth-filled dam in the world. Find the rim trail from outside the gate of the parking lot, which is locked by 4pm.  Skirt the chain link fence before turning left onto the route, which follows, along the high bank of the white river.  Keep your eyes out for several road crossings for trial connections.  Rails protect against steep and loose drop-offs, which can be especially dangerous in wet weather. The trail ebbs and flows nicely through forest canopy.  Take the route down to connect to the river trail.  A sandy spot by the river makes for a nice picnic or turnaround point.
